Long Term Demographic Changes

A few article I came across recently on some rather large demographic trends that I have been following for the last few years. Mainly, that households are becoming larger, while at the same time, immigration is slowing. These changes appear to be both large and long lasting so I think it would behoove us to keep an eye on them in the future, as the progress of these two social movements will likely have an effect on many other parts of society; Housing, education, retirement, elder care, childcare - etc.

Households Doubling Up

In February, after being evicted from their Gainesville apartment, Holly, James, Madison and their good-natured pit bull, Caley, moved into a cramped bedroom in the house where Holly grew up. Neither of Madison's parents had been able to find work for more than a year.
Of the myriad ways the Great Recession has altered the country's social fabric, the surge in households like the Maggis', where relatives and friends have moved in together as a last resort, is one of the most concrete, yet underexplored, demographic shifts.

Immigration Slowing

Census Bureau data released in September showed that the number of multifamily households jumped 11.7 percent from 2008 to 2010, reaching 15.5 million, or 13.2 percent of all households. It is the highest proportion since at least 1968, accounting for 54 million people.
http://teachingwithdata.blogspot.com/2010/09/illegal-immigration-slowing-quickly.html
The Pew Hispanic Center, a non-partisan research organization, says that the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States is down about 900,000 from 12 million to 11.1 million, though the population is hard to estimate. This two-year trend marks the first statistically significant decline in the undocumented population in the last twenty years. The annual inflow is down more sharply: from a peak of 850,00 per year at the beginning of the decade to around 200,000 per year for the period of the study -- March 2007 to March 2009. The decline in illegal immigration was most notable from Central and South American countries other than Mexico.

The world has moved a step closer to a food price shock after the US government surprised traders by cutting stock forecasts for key crops, sending corn and soyabean prices to their highest level in 30 months.

The price jump comes after the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation warned last week that the world could see repetition of the 2008 food crisis if prices rose further. The trend is becoming a major concern in developing countries.

  17. @Thor,

Great post today, and so timely.

I think many families have had to double up, like it or not, or be homeless.

The immigration numbers prove that they come here illegally to work, and will go back home when there is no work. The fact that the USA has no credible system to check for citizenship and that businesses like the really cheap labor means that this trend will be reversed once the economy starts growing again.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Mutt,

The market is going up until it doesn't. That is the secret to everything.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thor - Those are fairly significant numbers, just over 2 million more house holds sharing resource, minus almost 1 million illegals who are no longer looking for housing.

We currently have a glut of houses on the market and an uncountable number of houses waited to be forclosed on and that is not even taking into concideration all the people who will eventually stop paying their morgtages and end up loosing their houses.

Personally I do not see housing recovering for quite some time and if housing is part of the back bone of our economy, that means the economy will be weak until housing starts to turn around.

But hey we are going to get some numbers, so it the market will go up and everything will be ok.

    Mutt

    ReplyDelete
  20. Denise - yup, totally agree. We need to remember that immigration policy in this country is controlled by business, not immigrants and their families.

I wish the idiots in the MSM would do a better job at shining the spotlights where they would do the most good. Can't upset the corporate overlords though.

That Lou Dobbs controversy a few months ago was a classic example.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mutt - yup yup! As sad as it is to see how this is going to affect housing (and the economy) over the long term, I think it's high time we move beyond our obsession with the Nuclear Family. We'd all be better served by this I think - families helping each other out. It's one of the things my grandparents always looked back fondly to when it came to The Depression, how everyone came together to help each other out.

  22. Denise - I hear you there, I went long yesterday (After the bump up) I waited until Monday and it did not look to good so Tuesday I was going to enter but we had that afternoon decline. And even though you explained how and why that was not an actual correction, I still waited....

Oh well I missed out on the initial move up, but it sure beats waiting for this thing to actually correct it's self.

And the pressure is up and with the FED throwing money all over the place and HFT and other silliness, might as well hold my nose and go long.

Like you said it will go up until it doesn't, I am hear to learn and if I keep waiting for what I want to see, I will never learn.

  27. Illegals and Social ServicesJanuary 13, 2011 at 12:50 PM

One of the things that has always bothered me is how freely social services are given to illegals.

Food stamps, child care, medical, emegency funds with no questions asked about citizenship, they just need to show up at the welfare office.

They then take the lower paying jobs, because well they don't need to buy food or health care or other things. Basicially the tax payer is subsudizing their lower wage jobs.

The job market is drying up and that has forced appx 1,000,000 to not take the risk of illegally coming over.

Wait until the social services start to dry up and there is no longer a pay check just for being here.

Don't get me wrong I am all for immigration as that has what has helped to made our country great, but I am against subsudized programs that encourage illegal imigration.

We have had our share of stalkers who only wish to stir up trouble, insult our people and then go back where they came from to engage in more personal attacks against our people.

I wish that we could all get along but as we all know that is not reality in the blogosphere where so many blogs have had to resort to moderated comments because of the intent to disrupt by a few bad apples.

  63. Denise - Good question, I don't know :-) I follow real estate development in Hollywood fairly closely but nothing much else locally.

Hollywood continues it's gentrification, I'm surprised at how much has been approved considering the overall economy, but I guess there's a lot of money to be made redeveloping the area more heavily for tourism.

One of these days I'll have to do a post on it, it's pretty fascinating stuff to watch, that's for sure.

As for the rest of the economy, well, traffic is just as bad as it ever was. . .

    ReplyDelete
  64. Manny - sort of - most of the people who buy our products are people needing to lose a lot of weight, rather than the already fit crowd you might expect with P90X. They only represent a very small percentage of our total sales apparently.

The way they explain our sales strength to us in company meetings is that 1. we're counter cyclical, so the worse the economy does, usually the better we do - more people stay at home and watch TV because they're either unemployed or cutting back on going out, so the more people who watch TV, the more people see our commercials and buy our stuff. Also, the worse the economy does, the more people will cancel the gym membership and try the work-out at home stuff that we sell.

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Thor: Really? That surprises me a little. I kind of thought most would be people that are already in somewhat decent (or not horrible) shape but just want to kick up their routines a bit. I say this because the P90x isn't really for ideal for someone who's morbidly overweight, since it's a really tough, challenging regimine, right? I would think that those truly overweight would be better starting more slowly. Would seem like a healthier way so they don't hurt themselves or simply lose interest right off the bat.....but you'd know better than me as someone who works there. Surprises me a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Thor: The countercyclicality of it makes a lot of sense though. My gym, after the BCBS kick-back for going 12 times a month is only $20 a month and I'd hate to spend more than that, even though most of our friends pay at least $80-$120/month for their memberships as the full health clubs. I just can't stomach paying that kind of money for a gym membership unless I plan to basically live there or hang around a lot, which I don't do. Within the last six weeks, I've started mixing some yoga into the routine with my wife, and I really like it a lot.

  67. In Du Page county where I live the unemployment rate went from 9.5 1/1/10 to 7.1 11/1/10.

That is a huge decrease and is reflected in the new businesses in town, homes that sat for years have been sold (at huge discounts) and things are looking better.

In Cook county, the story is much bleaker, but still improved.

    11.7 1/1/10
    9.4 11/1/10

I am not sure how much of the improvement is people leaving the labor force and how much is due to real hiring.

If there has been hiring then the tax revenues should help the state's finances.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Of course, the stock market is up 14.1% since 12/31/09.

And I don't know how many jobs were due to the stimulus.

    ReplyDelete
  69. There are new restaurants popping up everywhere around my area. At 7% unemployment, things aren't so bad in relative sense here but it's still very uneven overall.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Manny - I know! I was surprised when they told me that. Having worked here for four years though, it makes total sense. What it is though, is that folks who are in better shape, people who go to the gym a lot, know how hard P90X is if you really do it right. People who don't work out, or have never worked out, are of the mistaken opinion that they'll be able to do it in no time. Not realizing that if you have a lot of weight to lose, you're going to have to do P90X (or the new one, Insanity) a few times before you've both lost the weight, and are ready to start adding back muscle.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @Thor: If that's true, then I'll bet most of these people eventually drop the P90x and stop working out altogether. If one is obese and never exercises, the exact wrong thing to do is to start an intense regimen right off that bat. It will be too hard and they won't stick with it, and over the longer term it will probably disillusion many more, who will give up go back to even unhealthier habits. So much "all or nothing" in this country. The obese shouldn't be worrying about 6-pack abs, they need to just worry about getting off the couch and eating decent food!

  73. I can see the appeal of it though. In the end, in comparison to buying an elliptical or exercise bike or weight machine, it's a small risk (about $100, right?) so if they drop it they won't feel as bad. It's a pretty brilliant concept when you think about it. Love the simplicity of it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Manny - totally agree, unfortunately Americans prefer the quick fix. Can't tell the guy who's 100 pounds overweight that he's too fat and out of shape to do P90X and that he should choose one of the easier programs and spend the next year dieting and exercising and getting into the kind of shape that a program like P90X really requires. 76. Thor – Just over 3 months ago I started the P90x, in the mean time I hurt my back (From a previous injury) for three weeks, then came down with a nasty flu another three weeks out.

I have always tried to maintain my shape, but as I get older and sit behind a desk more it becomes difficult to find the time especially shuttling the young one around after school.

The first 45 days on the program I saw some pretty decent result, then on day 45, I tweaked my back. That did not stop me, but sure slowed me down, it took just over three weeks before I felt comfortable going all out again, then just before Christmas (Which would have been about day 90) I came down with the flu, joints aching, nasty cough and felt just plain miserable and completely stopped working out for almost 3 weeks. Last week I started up again.

During those down times, I was able to maintain the initial weigh loss, but did not make any further inroads.

So far I am happy with the results and believe they could have been much better had I not run into problems, but what I think is a major problem for many people, is like you say, instant gratification. Most people do not seem to realize it took them years to get all round and out of shape and think that they should see results in just a couple weeks, in the mean time, the will satisfy their hard work with jelly donut, because they believe they earned it after such a hard work out.

People want instant results without having to put the effort into it.

All in all I think it is a good program and have made the conscious decision to get up an extra hour earlier everyday to do it and closely watch what I eat.

However I do not believe most people need a program like that if they only took the time to be consistant in caring for their bodies, but if a program like P90x is the motivation (like me) they need then it is money well spent.

But DAMNIT why don’t I look like Brad Pitt yet….

  77. @Mutt,

I think also a big factor is the fact that when people are so out of shape the task is daunting, it might take months if not more than one year to get back into shape and then the rest of their lives trying to stay there.

New Jersey Slashes Bond Sale after Christie's New Jersey Bankrupt Comments

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has learned that talking about state insolvency may have a cost.

About 20 minutes after Christie, 48, told a town-hall meeting in Paramus today that health-care costs “will bankrupt” the state, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority cut its tax-exempt school-related bond offering by more than half to $712.3 million.

  82. Denise - GUILTY!! of that :(

I agree, that people just do not realize it will take longer then they think it should.

What I tried to lay out above is, even though I had good initial results there were two times when the workout process came to a stand still and either time it would have been easy to not restart.

I think often times people will say to themselves "I did not get the results I wanted, when I wanted them, so it wasn't worth it"

So what if things take twice/three times as long as we expected as long as we are moving in a possitive direction.

Now where did you hide that chocolate cheeze cake?

  83. Mutt - I didn't know you were doing P90X - good for you! Sorry you had to break it up the way you did.
It's all about the diet really. I was going to be a part of one of the new infomercials we're working on - one focused on Abs and changed my mind when I saw the diet restrictions.

Also, everyone responds different to both workouts and exercise. I'm lucky in that I think I'm part gorilla and muscle up pretty quick when I work out regularly. I can also gain and lose weight pretty fast which is nice when you're trying to bulk up for size and then cut down for definition.

I turn 40 this year so am about to start a pretty serious diet and exercise regime. Want to be in tip top shape for the big day in November :-)

Or, is this just a forum where it's ok to call republicans idiots?

You've been discussing how warm and hospitable this "family" is and how it's all very "civil."

Is it ok to call any politician an "idiot" here?

  87. Anon (6:01) – It comes down to common sense, is it fair for me to say Barak Obama is an Idiot?

Did he say he has been to all 57 states?
    Yes, he did.

    Do we have 57 states?

    No we don’t.

Was that an idiotic statement he made, IMHO, yes, does making that statement make him an idiot… Well who knows?

Your question is rhetorical and only poised to insight people, do I think that is idiotic – yes, do most of the people here think that is idiotic, probably, does that make you an idiot? Who knows?

Would it be fair for me to call you an idiot? No it would not.

In my humble opinion you are trying to pick a speck out of someone else’s eye, yet ignoring the rock that is in yours.

You are throwing out the entire pot of soup because one fly landed in it.

You are cutting off the hand because of a splinter.

If you think Denise was wrong in calling this guy an idiot, thank you for doing so, but to do it for the soul purpose of stirring the pot is well....idiotic.

There is no way to explain it any further, I honestly do not know how.

So let me ask you a rhetorical question – Why did you ask Denise this question and would anything she answered statified you?

  88. @Anon,

Yes, we regularly call out idiots of all persuasions when they do idiotic things, including anonymous posters such as yourself.

Obama, Clinton, and others have received their share of scorn as well. It's just that the right has so much idiocy that it is difficult not to stumble over something new everyday.

Summers, Emmanuel, Geithner, Rubin, Paulson, etc. all Democrats to name a few, have been criticized again and again here as well as many of Obama's policies and style of governing.

But hey, never let the facts get in the way of an attempt to stir up trouble, right?

i.e., Sarah Palin (R-Idiot) took the cake yesterday on the day of the Memorial Service to play the victim and use some anti-Semitic "Blood Libel" rhetoric. Way to go, Sarah, it's all about you! Frankly, it is difficult to ignore such idiocy.

We are warm and hospitable to everyone of our commentators who deserves it, and it is very civil which is a totally different issue than the honest criticism of public officials, so please stop trying to conflate the two.

Criticizing a public official is a right that all of us have under the 1st amendment, can I help it if the right is a gift that keeps on giving? Lock and Load! Second Amendment Solution! Bulls Eyes on Democratic congressmen. The list is endless.

When a tone deaf moron like Christie shoots his mouth off about New Jersey going bankrupt during the time when bond issues for his state are being marketed to the public should we applaud him?

    Good points.

As if they ever had one good thing to say about Democrats or us as a group. EVER.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking, but predictable.

We are not perfect here by a long shot, but at least we don't anonymously go over to his house and shit on the floor, again and again and again.

Again, the stalker analogy is so apt. You would think just after the massacre by a stalker they would have the decency to lay low.

  96. anon-(6.01)-is it ok to call any politician an "idiot" here?
No sir, no sir it is not. As the definition of an idiot clearly states someone having a mental age of less than 3 years old and an intelligence quotient under 25, and as most politicians clearly have a mental age of more than 3 years, and therefore only satisfy one of the determining factors, it is not appropriate.

  100. No. It is not ok for you to stalk me or this website. You are a stalker, out to terrorize this blog with your rantings.

You were warned once to stay away, and yet you still can't tear your miserable ass away.

What is wrong with you? Seriously, what is your problem that you cannot leave us alone?

  101. Psychologists often group individuals who stalk into two categories: psychotic and nonpsychotic.[10] Stalkers may have pre-existing psychotic disorders such as delusional disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia. Most stalkers are nonpsychotic and may exhibit disorders or neuroses such as major depression, adjustment disorder, or substance dependence, as well as a variety of Axis II personality disorders (such as antisocial, avoidant, borderline, dependent, narcissistic, or paranoid). Some of the symptoms of "obsessing" over a person is part of obsessive compulsive personality disorder. The nonpsychotic stalkers' pursuit of victims can be influenced by various psychological factors, including anger, hostility, projection of blame, obsession, dependency, minimization, denial, and jealousy. Conversely, as is more commonly the case, the stalker has no antipathic feelings towards the victim, but simply a longing that cannot be fulfilled due to deficiencies either in their personality or their society's norms

  103. Dentist have more fun pulling teethJanuary 13, 2011 at 8:37 PM

Anon - Pulling teeth would be more fun and productive then trying to discuss this with round about arguments that can not be answered.

But being a patient man I will give it another try, so open wide cuz here come the pliers.

Lets start with your question about left wing ideolog, you ask "Would it be ok to ask that question here" - You just did, so it seems it is ok to ask.

Second I didn't see any statements to your original one that would indicate anyone here got their "Panties in a bunch"

It seems pretty clear that the majority of people here see things from a different perspective then you.

Not every question is an argument and not every argument is a question.

But if you want to try and ask rhetorical questions that have no answer only to see if you can get someone's panty in a bunch. Best of luck to ya.

It is plain and simple that your intent is not to enter dialog to increase understanding, but it is to try and inflame with non-sense, so again best of luck to you.

Damn pulling teeth is no fun :(

  107. Just my opinion, (but I am not going to rock the boat because we already have someone doing that)

But I say for now, we let the comments (Unless they are personal attacks) stand.

I believe we are all adult enuff to see through the intent and meaning behind such non-sense.

Although I seriously doubt the poster will see his trivial attempts as non-sense, but it will give us something to laugh at.

    There are my two pennies.

  108. @Mutt,

By allowing the posts to stand you give the stalker a forum from which to say anything he pleases. Since I am the target of his rants I really do not want to give him that power over me.

Plainly and simply. As we know very well from past actions it is all about power and control. I will not cede control of this blog to a stalker, even for a few well deserved laughs.

I will not give him the power to come here, shit on the floor and leave the turd stinking up the joint. It is not funny, it is stalking.

We tried to be nice about it, tried to ignore him and he ramped up his insults. It didn't work. So I am going to delete his posts no matter how innocuous.

Mutt, sorry, but you don't give the stalker control and power over us. By leaving the comments stand that is exactly what we are doing.

He gets off on seeing his comments and our reaction to them. Well, it is time to take that away as he is obviously intent on disrupting our blog. No mas.
