Manny Mondays - Holiday Schedule Edition

Schedule for December 20th - Jan 3rd.

We have two of our posters on vacation and due to the usually quiet holiday weeks, we anticipate a lighter posting schedule and comments until after the 1st of the year.

Early Christmas treat: 2010’s total lunar eclipse

LOS ANGELES (AP) — ‘Twill be nights before Christmas and high overhead, the moon will turn brown or maybe deep red. The Earth and the sun with celestial scripts will conspire to make a lunar eclipse.

Weather permitting, sky gazers in North and Central America and a tiny sliver of South America will boast the best seats to this year’s only total eclipse of the moon.

This sounds like fun, Venus can also be seen in the early winter sky in the early mornings in the east.

  1. Chinese new year is Feb 03, 2011. Nothing much happening before that?

Market seems to be stalling. Holidays, taxes etc. Q4 for high-end retailers, and oil cos. should be good.

  4. ooohhhh it is quiet out there.

So what does anybody think about the spanking V took? I went long Friday, added first thing this morning. I think I may hold it for awhile.

I almost got stopped out of my JRCC short. But still hanging in there. It was interesting looking at the upupaway stocks this weekend, the biggest percentage of up stocks were from my metals and mining chart.

  5. Rock - I saw that V got taken out to the wood shed, but they got punished too much for something that was not thier fault.

My first thought was like yours, they will shake off the beating they took, but then the pesimist in me started thinking.

If they fell that far that quickly over something so simple as a 12 cent charge, what will happen when/if really bad news hits?

Anyway I know you are not buying and holding so you should do well, cuz they should bounce back up.

There are my 2 pennies on V

  6. Morning everyone!

    That V is really something.

Visa (NYSE: V) and MasterCard (NYSE: MA) plunged more than 10% last week, after the Federal Reserve proposed limiting debit-card interchange fees to between $0.07 and $0.12 per transaction -- more than 80% below what's currently charged.

V has been a pos since May, so this is not surprising.

  7. It will be quiet the next two weeks as so many folks are gone, but the markets might be moving around regardless.

  9. Goldman call for SP500 was a great one. Couldn't have been more accurate were they playing in their own playground with select friends.

Enjoy your holidays Manny, Thor and all fellows taking a break.

  10. Nice thing about having been around for two years now, is that if you pay close attention, you can see the same people (bloggers, economists, and especially regular commenters) make many of the same predictions they did in 2008 and 2009.

What's most amusing are the commenters, you'd think being mostly wrong two years running would make a person less likely to try to forecast what 2011 will be like.

  12. Just got back from shopping. One of the places that I stopped at, an upscale mall, was fairly busy, lots of 20-30-50% off the entire store signs, people had multiple shopping bags, but I think other years things have been better. I had no trouble parking and as I walked by the different stores I could see that they were moderately busy.

The clothing items I bought were 50% off which was nice.

The Apple store was packed to the gills, the Microsoft store not so much. I think that the Microsoft store is fairly new.

Crate and Barrel was busy but not crazy, I was tempted by a few things but didn't buy anything.

Borders was the busiest store by far with long, long lines to the registers that stretched through the store. I guess Amazon has not killed Borders yet.

In other years at this particular mall it would be difficult to find parking, and all the stores would have been jammed to the rafters, it was definitely a much less busy shopping experience.

  13. Denise - This mall concept is still kind of new to me, before I moved to the "big city" I had to drive 25 miles to get to the closest mall (Which BTW was turned into a Hilton Hotel)

But now to get to work I drive behind a fairl large mall every day, starting last week I noticed the parking lot much fuller and today at lunch I actually had to slow down for mall drivers.

However I have heard in the years past that they needed to have police monitor the flow of traffic and that is was plain afull to drive behind it during Christmas.

What all this means - I have not got a clue, but just wanted to pass along the info.

  14. @Mutt,

With so many people shopping on line (or not at all) anecdotal mall traffic is not a good indicator of anything. But what was interesting to note is that at the more upscale mall the sales were incredible, but it didn't seem to bring huge amounts of traffic.

So the more wealthy shoppers might not be buying as much as anticipated and/or the retailers are trying to get the less affluent shopper out and shopping at the mall instead of WalMart and TJ Maxx.

Probably because every retailer is offering huge discounts just to move the stuff. So many smaller stores had everything 30-50% off.

  15. Denise - I am getting Starbucks gift cards for a couple people and a few other items, like a video game, that are going to cost pretty much the same when ever they are purchased.

But there are several items I am waiting to buy until after Christmas, I am kind of betting that what the retailors did not sell at 30-50% off before Christmas, they will be putting even bigger discounts on after.

Also Lexus says I can get a brand new car from them before Christmas for only $499 a month, that is just way too good of a deal to pass uo - NOT!!!
