Friday Potpouri - The Rahminator
Tuesday, Rahm Emanuel was successful in his bid to be Mayor of the City of Chicago. The reaction to his win in Chicago is mixed as he is inheriting a city with a terrible budget crisis combined with a history of patronage politics, cronyism and corruption. It will be fascinating to see how Rahm will govern as Mayor and how the city will change without a Daley at the helm. (disclaimer: I did not vote as I am not a resident of the city of Chicago)
I don't have any opinion about Rahm at this point except that he has proven to be quite capable in his past endeavors, ironically Mayor Daley's brother Bill now has Rahm's chief of staff job for Obama in a political musical chairs.
Rahm's First Day as Mayor
"As a legacy of his Washington days, Emanuel has been tagged with a colorful reputation for throwing tirades and spewing expletives. The caricature makes great fodder for commentators and comedians, but also obscures a deep reservoir of personal and professional discipline that has nurtured Emanuel's career and confined any tantrums to the behind-closed-doors variety.
Rahm Emanuel and "The Chunks of Burke"
"Before we announce a new Tribune contest — the Pick the Moment Rahm Totally Loses It Sweepstakes — a couple of observations."
Rahm's Washington Ties Will Come In Handy
'But those friends also recognize the challenges Emanuel inherits, chief among them shrinking federal aid and a fiscal outlook for cities and states so dire that Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., uses the words "doomsday scenario."'
Faceoff with teachers union awaits Emanuel
"The divide culminated last week when union president Karen Lewis stood before reporters and said: "The fact is Rahm Emanuel does not seem to support publicly funded public education as we know it." The union chose not to endorse a candidate for mayor."
The city wanted a strongman — and it got one
"Yet no matter what you call him, no matter what you think of him, by winning Tuesday's election without a messy runoff, Rahm Emanuel is boss of Chicago.
He'll govern that way. It's what was sold. It's what is expected. The thing is, he's smarter than the old boss, more talented, skillful, adept, more focused.
If one of Rahm's relatives ever receives $70 million in City Hall pension funds to invest in a real estate deal, he won't be able to say that he didn't know what was going on.
No one would believe him."
Mayor Emanuel
"Did you see what just happened? Do you understand what happens next?"
And nine more inches of snow is expected in Chicago, bringing us to a new snowfall record for the month of February.

ReplyDeleteThink we might see a Rahm/Daly ticket?
I think we may be hitting a key value for AAPL right now.
ReplyDeleteOn the 15 minute chart, it's stocs are at 80% and are turning over, but it's got a higher high. I think if it pulls back and has a higher low than 338.50 price or so, then we will see it pop higher. If we see it break 338, then I'm guessing investors are still thinking about the white shroud, and its effect on long-term.
I mean, how many iphone2's can you come out with, or how many ipood2's?
ipood2? Hmmmmmm.......
Mornin' folks! Great post Denise! I see we got our snap back today.

Rock, re aapl. Be careful before next weeks event, if you're thinking of shorting.
ReplyDeleteRock - Yes, next week is iPad 2 - that should be worth a little bit of a pop. Not to mention they just released new MacBook Pro's yesterday.
ReplyDelete@Emmy,
ReplyDeletePOT going up again.

Next pullback should be a nice one if anyone is daytrading the equities...
ReplyDeleteGood morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments about the Rahm post. He will be the one to watch in the coming years and since he has a much different reputation than Daley the effect on the city will be fascinating to watch.
Rock,
Bill Daley might be thinking Daley/Emanual! But there is no doubt that Rahm has presidential aspirations.
OK, Thor, Greg, it's time to predict the future.
ReplyDeleteI predict if Steve shows up, you'll see a huge pop.
I predict if Steve does not show up, you'll see a small pop followed by a slow decline.
If he doesn't show up, I'll short the pop. I know, I said never short AAPL, do not short strength. I just think a big piece of the the strength is dying.
Sadly.
ICan,
ReplyDeleteFood shortages and inflation might be the driver of unrest in many countries competing with democracy. I noticed that the Sauds were starting to hand out extra money and benefits to their workers.
Rock . . .I like your methodology! :-)
ReplyDeleteSo strange listening to the news this morning and having them talk about the roads that might be closed over the weekend because of SNOW!
Here's the pullback...
ReplyDeleteThor - Yesterday you mentioned you guys might get 9 inches of snow. WOW Or as Rock would say MOM)that is a lot of snow.
ReplyDeleteFortunatly it should melt pretty quickly for you guys, but if it is bad and stick around for a couple days, you might just want to concider staying home, cuz some of those other drivers can get pretty wild.
Mutt
Thor,
ReplyDeleteIt's not like you have hundreds of snow plows lined up waiting to go or mountains of salt kept in silos like we do.
I remember driving down to Florida for vacation as a kid and there was an ice storm in Tennessee and they had guys with pickup trucks using shovels to throw salt onto the interstate.
Whoops, looks like that pullback failed.
ReplyDeleteWe were supposed to get snow last night but only got a dusting so far.
ReplyDeleteThis one, DSS...
ReplyDelete:)
Looks like a rounded reversal to me.
ReplyDelete@Dss
ReplyDeleteSo on the Tennessee (I70? I75?) interstate, when the guys in the pickups smiled at you, did you see teeth?
Rock,
ReplyDeleteBe nice. I don't remember the actual interstate but probably was I-75.
Or I-40...
ReplyDelete@Rock
ReplyDeleteIt’s tough to make predictions, especially about future.’
Yogi Berra
Rock - Hahaha, you're bad! :P
ReplyDeleteRock - You are being too generous, you should have asked Denise if she saw his tooth - Oh wait she said guys (Plural) so maybe between them they had teeth....My bad...Carry on.
ReplyDeleteMutt
Goodness what a slow day!
ReplyDeleteThere's some heavy heavy snow coming down all around us
ReplyDeleteHey Thor - Play it safe with all the snow in your area.
ReplyDeleteMUCH better to be home bored then injured in a wreck somewhere.
Not say you guys are bored, just saying you guys are not use to (Nore 99% of the people) driving in the snow.
