  1. Nice links, Emmanuel117.

    My opinion about Wael:
Every multinational company will at one time or another run into situations that will try its resilience to pressures from friendly and unfriendly governments. Every company that I know of has an employee agreement which makes the employee face the fact that they may be personally in contact with that outside pressure. And an employee taking the position, specifically with a multinational company as a product manager for a mulitnational product, must know this when he/she signs that employee agreement.

Salaried positions are not hourly. You don't have the option to "quit for 8 hours" and do what you want. You work for the company 24/7. When you do something that is not in the best interest of the company, you must face the consequences.

The right thing for Wael to do was quit or notify and take leave, and go be an activist. Instead, he used his position and power to leverage his importance to assist the protesters. To say "my company was not involved" shows immaturity and ignorance. I would hope GOOG could find better prepared employees.

I enjoyed the video, and I got a kick out of this one, especially the leader:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7341978n&tag=watchnow

And the link about Anonymous is a great article. You can see how they gained access: not through hacking and network invasion, but through friendship.

Those social networking sites are dangerous. Also dangerous is who you give root access to.

  2. @Emmanuel,

Thank you for the links. Yes, the video is one of the best for sure!. I can imagine what people must have felt in India on Aug. 15, 1947. But it's been a long road, however, rewarding for a lot of people - those who were able to educate their kids.

  8. Here’s some trading notes from my homework.

Homework’s not done yet, but I’m still mostly full of bull. The Fed is still buying treasuries, although it looks like about a 4:1 ratio, that is, there are 4 times the amount of Treasuries submitted for the buyback reverse auction for each one that’s bought. I think this means it’s a buyer’s market, and the Fed is likely to make a lot of money. But who knows, the yields may go up a lot, and the price may plummet, in which case the Fed would be left holding the bag. Of treasuries.

You don’t suppose the government would let that happen, do you?

    Anyway:

I have noticed that my selection of stocks to watch and trade are very choppy lately, and my profits are cut because I don’t seem to be picking the ones that are trending the way I want them to trend, that is, up up and away in this market. So I did a screen, and got a list of stocks that have increased in price the last 3 trading days.

Of that list, the 3LB WEEKLY shows we are NEGATIVE on the following list ot stocks:

RFMD NDAQ LIFE CHRW CME CY DECK ENDP MIPS QGEN SNDK DLR ED ESI ESS JNY KO LPS LUV NSC RCL RY SVU T TMX VAR

I’m taking this list out, in order to generate the list of the strongest momentum stocks. However this list above may be the list of a turnaround stock, that is one that will trend higher more quickly. I may watch this list, looking for a pullback to see if the pullback is a lower low, and if it is, then that stock would still be trending down.

Of the list that’s left, the 3LB DAILY shows we are NEGATIVE on the following list:

AMTD ATHR ESRX FLEX JASO NTAP SLXP SOLR THOR TRMB ADS AIV ARO AVB CVD EQR HD MHP MKC SYY TIN TRW CHRW CME

This would indicate these stocks are in a turn-around phase, and may be candidates for shorts if our Up-Up-and-Away market turns. Remember: short weakness. Don’t short AAPL.

    Additionally I am removing
CCL DOV SHW THC TKR TMO VNG VTR LIFE
Because they are very choppy on the 3LB and are not trending. That leaves us with this list:

ACAS ADI ADTN AEO AGU ALK ALTR AMG AMP AMT AMZN AON APH AXE BBBY BC BCR BEXP BGC BIDU BIG BLK BRE BWA CBE CBS CCK CCL DCNS CMG CNI COH COO COV CSX CVC CXO DD DE DEI DHR DISCA DISCK EWBC FNSR FOSL FRT FRX GET GPS HOG HOLX HTZ ICE JCI JCP JDSU JLL JNPR JWN KFN KMX KSU LCAPA LNC LNT LUFK LULU MAC MCO MOS MRO MXIM NFLX NGG NVLS NVO OIS OMC OPEN PNRA POT PPO PPS PSA PWR PXD QCOM RAX RJF ROK ROP RVBD RYN SBAC SBGI SHLD SLM SNH STJ SVVS SWY SYK TEL TIF TNB TPX TRN TTMI TTWO UDR UNFI UNP UPS URBN UTX VMED VRSN WAT WERN WPI WSM WTW WY

Of this list, the following stocks are up >25% this month:

    BIG FNSR JDSU SBGI

Of this list, the following stocks are up 15% this month:
BGC BIDU CDNS CMG JNPR LULU OPEN PPO RVBD SHLD TNB TTWO WSM

And by comparison, the SPY is up 4%.

So my plan is to watch these for higher lows on pullbacks and perhaps start some positions in these. Hopefully they will be less choppy. But who knows.

  10. @Rock:The right thing for Wael to do was quit or notify and take leave, and go be an activist.

Basing my remarks on the CBS article only, so I may be missing facts.

But, according to CBS, Ghonim had notified and taken leave, as per his quote:"But when everything became public, I talked with the company and they suggested that I take a leave of absence and I also suggested that to them and I think it was a good decision for that. Google has nothing to do with this."

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Rock. Further:Instead, he used his position and power to leverage his importance to assist the protesters. To say "my company was not involved" shows immaturity and ignorance. I would hope GOOG could find better prepared employees.

The article makes no mention of Ghonim using his Google's edge in this conflict. Any references?

Only advantage that I can infer his job gave him would have to be from a technical standpoint.

Namely knowing which tools are most fit for a 2.0 revolution, e.g. an Android device among a pool of otherwise barely functional mobiles.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Finally, based on the meager official info that I'm aware of, I'd give Ghonim thumbs up (as to the numerous anonymous Egyptians) for actively contributing to overthrow the old crook's regime.

As for officially neutral Google, I believe it ends up being a positive PR event, if anything.

Agree with you on Ghonim. I think the underlying issue is what responsibility humans have toward others less fortunate. Ghonim had everything going for him . He did not have to do this. He did not use this time for personal leisure, holidays. He said he was a workaholic. Read Guardian blog - his interview when he was released after 12 days of jail. I think it was last Sunday/Monday, I provided all the links.

He is a true hero/mentor to the younger generations.

The next thing, I think, we don't want to admit is that multibillion $ US companies can bring down governments in order to obtain a better position when the new regime gets established.

I wonder. Maybe China was just too big to pull off.

Or, maybe we don't want to admit that multibillion $ US companies can be aimed at governments.

  23. @ICan:

I mean we are at war.

I believe I posted a comment on the blog before we came here that indicated we are at war.

I mean that powers, whether they be by the US Government or by other "elite" (to use a very bad and over-used and under-understood word) may use any force that may be available to them to gain advantage, including the use of multibillion $ corporations.

OK, I'm a crackpot. But did you see the posted article about the Egyptian affinity towards the US? Now that Google, a huge US concern essentially sponsored the communications that led to the overthrow of a disliked regime, how do you think that will affect the feelings towards the US? And, just suppose, that company (GOOG) gets some foothold in Egypt, maybe with Acer Android phones as being the new government's "standard", well, do you think Google might profit? Or do you think GOOG might profit by other means due to Wael's involvement?

I think so. That's why he did not take LOA, just a vacation, to go agitate. I think there was a lot more background than has hit the light of day yet.

He did not even take sabbatical. He was fully employed by GOOG.

Now that GOOG has helped topple Egypt, which direction will the cannon be aimed next? Do you think this is not being discussed throughout middle east governments?

And, I mean that it is possible that GOOG may have decided to try this kind of thing with China, but because of the presence of BIDU and the government's complete control over the routers, it didn't happen. Remember even after the Egypt net was shut down, well, SKYPE calls were still being made.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @MEHoffer:

I think CSCO down is as a result of the dilution of the CSCO marketing message and focus. CSCO is a buyer of technology companies and integrating those companies into the CSCO family. This dilutes the marketing focus on their cash cow, because now they have a much broader coverage requirement.

As a result, CSCO's router sales are off.

CSCO has superior equipment, Having had hands-on on JNPR and CSCO gear, there is no doubt. But equipment does not make sales. Sales and Marketing make sales.

JDSU it test equipment. I used one of their TDR's. It worked well, as good as Tektronix's
I think that more TE will be needed with the rollout of 4G. So I'm thinking JDSU is up on that theory.

On that note, watch out for Qualcomm. Their 4G radio and antennae design is stellar. I would not invest in Broadcomm right now for sure.

BIG is up because their management said "we think we'll sell out", got the pop, then the management dumped. That's theory, if I have time I'll look into the insider sales info to verify.

That's exactly what I started thinking when I read that the guy is not a mere employee in Google but is in an important position.

Yes maybe his quest for freedom is unrelated with the company that he works for but perception, perception, perception.

If in a time span of 12-16 months you have Google trying to force freedom in China so it can be more convenient for the company business model (which of course China can say well is none of my business).

Then proposing and obtaining the Atlantic Wind Connection; something that is highly strategic for the country and transforming Google in a government contractor of the first order.

Yes having now a Google guy in the heart of the egiptian revolution can start arising suspicions that

1)From a company point of view they are trying to increased their business...
(Getting a new slogan use Google and be free...lol).
Which is perfectly fine, but as I mentioned about perception above:

2)Having the company turned now in a strategic contractor for the government could start developing the believe that like before US government use Mubarak now planned the Zuckerberg strategy materialized by Google on the ground in the region and with the same objective of having a manager for the "Empire" to care for the interests of US government in the region like nothing change.

Yes I can see that kind of ideas being pander in the arab world, because of Google.

Would have been cleaner if the revolution get started by a humiliated guy, unemployed with his produce confiscated instead of a regional manager of a U.S contractor like Google is now.

    Good thoughts Rock.

  46. Yes Thor I think you hit the nail with the big brotheer kind of thing.

We are all adults and letting people made their case like I-Can and Mark did and just let it be.I-Can was very able to speak his mind. This is the first option, let it be.

    The second one:
If (because the next revolution that you are planning in Algeria didn't started yet) you have "idle stamina" and decided to participate in the argument generated among I-Can and Hoffer, be my guest is ok too, yes it's ok.

That's why I was very intent in an open space withouth a big brother or boss.

The beauty of this being a place that doesn't belong to anyone but all of the regular posters, makes your "Most of what you post..for any of us" be seen as if you really speak for all of us, and made Wolfie uneasy.

So my curiosity is exclusively related with the issue that made Wolfie respond to you, not with the conflict this could be for another time.

Do you really think that you are talking for all of us?In a big brother kind of way?

Even though everybody knows the response, I want it in writing here not to enlighten people but just to restrain your "algerian impulses" till the next flare up and keep our place with diversity of opinions.

Because if you put it in writing is going to last it's effects for a while at least.

And try to avoid your lone ranger impulses scare hordes of potential first time posters that can think why bother if one speaks in the name of everybody here.
Let diversity be and participate as much as you want but in your own name.

Otherwise maybe we are fomenting a new Mubarak here. :)

  47. Dan - Why are you adding your voice to this? Listen buddy, the conversation was originally between ICan and I. He was speaking to me, I understood what he was saying. MEH inserted himself into the conversation and asked ICan to explain himself. Ican declined. At that point the conversation should have been over.

MEH, who, as you know, has a habit of posting things that many of us do not understand. We have always been respectful to MEH with his "out there" posts. We never badger him on the topics, or give him shit because some of them do not make sense. Now, had this been the FIRST time MEH called someone out for something that he himself does, I'd have kept my mouth shut. However, this was not the first time MEH has done that. Not two months ago he did the very same thing to Denise. So, it's a habit and clearly it offends more than just me here.

Now here you are, inserting yourself into a situation that is not about you. Jesus, for someone who doesn't like these conflicts you sure do spend a lot of time doing your part to escalate them.

He did it!!, he did it!! he said the words...is one of us ,no is not going to be a Mubarak!!"

Thor, dude, I enjoy your posts greatly,I really do and you have your way to say things I never defended I-Can, Hoffer or even Wolfie for that matter.

Free speech at least to my uneducated opinion means that people state their opinions. You don't have any problem stating your opinions we all know that. :)
You can jump in as many flares you want, nobody is preventing you for doing that or persecuting you at all.Go fight be my guest.

You can defend or attack as you please.

If someone speaks in everybodies name has to be authorized, and silence in the rest makes people accept your opinion tacitly as the voice of all, don't know, maybe that made Wolfie react.

Compare the situation with one annoying thing about the Bush administration.

The tactic of being with us or against us.
    Why annoting?

It takes away from people the chance of express their views and people in a free society don't like that. This is when free speech dies.

I never thought for a second that I can prevent you for speaking your mind. :)

When someone speaks for all force people to participate even when they don't want to just to tell you "Hey speak for yourself not for me".

That doesn't mean that they are on the other side, (you shouldn't use that argument as a defense, confounding the opponent because is very weak).

It just means that you are not authorized to speak for everybody when you fight.Clear now?

  59. Dan - Dude, Jesus, I misspoke ok. This is insanity, why are you trying to make this into something it's not?

Relax - no one speaks for you, ok? That's a given, it's not even worth stating.

If someone speaks in everybodies name has to be authorized, and silence in the rest makes people accept your opinion tacitly

No it doesn't, not at all. Silence means nothing other than silence. When you try to ascribe meaning to silence, all you are doing is inserting your own opinions and emotions into the equation.

You keep going on about what was basically my misspeaking, shouldn't have used those words. If this situation has proven one thing Dan, it's that we are most definitely not of the same mind as a group, not by a long shot. I wouldn't have thought that needed to be said out loud, but apparently it does.

So, again, in print. I do not believe that I speak for everyone.

  61. You don't have to alienate Wolfie to defend I-Can.

Wolfie doesn't think that you spoke for him and he told you.Instead of just back up say sorry and keep your fight you just attacked Wolfie too for saying something with common sense (don't speak for him or anyone in your flares).

Doesn't mean that we belong to another place.
This is our place you don't own the space. That's all.

  63. Dan,

Give it a rest. Thor apologized for misspeaking. Enough.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Dan - Can we give this a rest for tonight please? I don't think I own the space. Your continued insistence that this is about something that it is not is, I think, offensive. You don't know me or my intentions so please do not try to ascribe intent where there is none.

"...Dan - Dude, Jesus, I misspoke ok. This is insanity, why are you trying to make this into something it's not?"

If someone misspoke says sorry dude and that's all.
But you attack Wolfie to defend I-Can it was very clear.

If you mispoke you don't attack instead you apologize or shut up.And you didn't that you just attack Wolfie for not backing you or remain silent.

If someone misspoke don't attack the other guy.

  67. Dan,

You are making a mountain out of a molehill; everyone but you has moved on. You made your point about twenty times. Give it a rest.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Dan - What's going on here with you tonight buddy? Look at this situation objectively for a second will you? As far as the principle players, Ican, Meh, myself, we're all fine. We all spoke our peace and have clearly moved on. Wolfie inserted himself into a situation he had no involvement with whatsoever, he spoke his piece, and I addressed him. You, another person who has nothing at all to do with this situation, have now decided to make it about something completely different. Now, it's not longer about treating people with respect, which, once again, is already cleared up. No, now we're talking about free speech, and attacking people.

    Why?

    What's going on?

I apologized, but that's not enough, why? Why is that not enough for you Dan?

  69. Well so much for our group mind - there go my damn master plans of world domination.

  70. Dan,

You notice that Wolfie has left the building? Not participating?

Funny that you think that Thor should mind his own business and not speak for anyone but you are there speaking for Wolfie.

Is there a full moon tonight?

Everyone, please mind your own business.

    Tomorrow is another day.

  71. Hah - well you can say one thing about us I think - even when we disagree, we're a polite bunch of people ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  72. NOT that I'm speaking for everyone!!

I'm sure some folks are not polite at all! :-P

    ReplyDelete
  73. Of course we are really polite and that fact brings more contrast to the opinions, which is really good in my view.

Well that's one of the reason I don't fight...is because I...ca...not control...myself. Start foaming my mouth and keep going and going for 17 hours at the least.Lol.

No seriously, I can be wery wery dense and focused so everybody is going to go insane.

It's your plan already decided after Algeria?

    Sorry I didn't understand.
CSCO has large company infrastructure established. For example CSCO used themselves as a bank to loan money to companies to buy CSCO's gear, booked the revenue that quarter. That takes big bankroll, and it's doubtful without further investigating balance sheets that someone smaller, like fiber optics companies, can accomplish that.

As Dss has pointed out) CSCO uses their size to manage their earnings statements. I'm thinking the reason their bookings are off is it may be payback time for some of the loans, and sales are down, because as I said before, marketing has lost focus.

And maybe because with the expansions, they lost the ability to calculate their market share for each of the factions. You may know that as GOOG buys companies, typically they keep the key engineering staffs and consolidate Marketing and Sales. A recipe for short term success, and long term failure, IMHO.

Google: On the side of freedom.

I love it. You should send it to them. Especially if you can give it an anti-apple twist.

  76. @Wolfstreet

    I agree.

    @Thor:
Thanks for the tip. I wasn't ready for Egypt, but this time, to be sure I will short Algerian bonds and long oil. I think Algeria makes about 2% of the world's oil? Something like that.

I love Dss' quip "you'll read it in the news". How accurate can anything be?

Why did the blond climb the chain link fence?
To see what was on the other side.

Why did the kindergarten cross the play ground?
to get to the other slide.

I got the first two, uau! isn't it something or what?

    Or what.

Now, when you say in the 3rd one to get to the other slide, you mean slide that you put in a proyector?

Lots of synaptic activity but nowhere near.

I remember asking a girlfriend of mine that her english was impeccable why she decided to take a course of humor in English.

And she told me because is the last thing that you are able to get from a second language.
    Thank you Mutt bring more.
