Manny Mondays 11th Hour Re-Write: Osama Bin Laden DEAD

I had another post planned but will save it for another day (maybe next Monday?) due to the big news that Bin Laden has been killed. As someone who was there that day working on Wall Street, this is pretty emotional for me, but I want to open things up today. What are the implications of this going forward in the short and long term? The floor is yours, folks. I'll be out of pocket most of the day but back in Monday evening to chime in.

  7. What Pakistan Knew About Bin Laden

There is no evidence that any of the above men were sheltered by Pakistani officials. Indeed, since 2001, the double-game has usually worked like this: While Pakistani officials may covertly support the Taliban, they have bought cover for themselves by coöperating with the United States against Al Qaeda.

But the fact that Osama was hiding in an urban area raises many obvious questions, like who was taking care of him, and how. Abbottabad is only thirty miles from the Pakistani capital, and it is home to a Pakistani military base, a military academy, and many retired Pakistani officers. Conspiracy theories abound in Pakistan; since 9/11, the most common has been that Bin Laden was being sheltered by the I.S.I.

  9. @dss,

    Pakistan has been exposed!

We, people of India know where terrorism in Kashmir is coming from? And in Arunachal - in the East from China. We got two barbarians at the gate.

    Pakistan was hiding him.

An article from the NYTimes, "American Aid Plan for Pakistan is Foundering(?)".

"Fear of corruption and incompetence have stymied $7.5 Billion in U.S. aid aimed at winning over Pakistanis , officials said".

America just took away Pakistan's punch-bowl. Pakistan is aiding and abetting terrorism and using fear to black-mail America. Same can be said of Afghanistan. Why cann't al-quida be beaten? Pakistan.

  10. The interesting thing is that Obama must have known Saturday night when he was skewering Trump that this raid was imminent.

And the Trump and the other birthers would look extremely petty and almost unpatriotic by distracting Obama from his responsibilities, which is CIC.

All of the birthers and most of the Republican party have to be looking around and realizing that Obama just secured his re-election and is almost invincible going forward.

Of course, there will be those who will still try to discredit Obama, but politically, it is game, set and match.

  11. So true, ICan.

Anyone have interesting links, please post them. Lots of good info out there today.

Do we have any lurkers from Pakistan?

  13. From Reuters:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/02/us-binladen-compound-idUSTRE7411NX20110502

(Reuters) - U.S. forces finally found al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden not in a mountain cave on Afghanistan's border, but with his youngest wife in a million-dollar compound in a summer resort just over an hour's drive from Pakistan's capital, U.S. officials said.

    ReplyDelete
  14. "Members of an elite Navy Seals team dropped by helicopter to the compound were under orders to kill not capture bin Laden, who had eluded U.S. forces for 13 years, a senior U.S. security official told Reuters.

"This was a kill operation," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity."

  15. @dss,

Mr. Obama signed orders at 8:20am on Friday.

Even Pakistanis wern't told(because they insted that Bin Laden wasn't in their country.

One helicoptre went down but no one injured.

A woman was used as a shield, but killed. 5 killed including Osama.

24/7 media - people forget fast. Where is tsunami news?

But this is Mr. Obama and America's moment to shine.

According to NYT, "As crowds gathered outside the White House, there was little question that Mr. Obama's presidency had forever been chaned".

  17. Bin Laden was living in a mansion, 1 hr. drive from Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

The mansion was worth close to 1 million U$D.

1U$D = 84.60 Pak Rupees at this moment.

This mansion was close to Pakistani Military acedemy.

Built in 2005, time of Gen. Parvez Musharraf( friend of Mr. Bush).

  23. My 10min bearish divergence from Friday ain't doing that good huh..

While I had my timing a little early, the move down may still play today : 10 minutes chart still not showing strength, if not weakness.

Therefore, I still believe we'll see some selling today, which could last a few days.

  27. Pakistani Twitterer Sohaib Athar Unknowingly Live Tweets Assault on Osama Bin Laden Compound

Pakistani IT consultant Sohaib Athar has effectively obliterated my little corner of Twitter history by live-tweeting the assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound – which resulted in the terrorist leader’s death – without even knowing it. Under the Twitter handle @ReallyVirtual, Athar’s historic tweets began innocuously enough with this observation: “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event),” and jokingly threatening to take out his “giant swatter.” (h/t Shoq)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Very funny transcript by Athar before he knew what had happened.

"@kashaziz technically, it is unidentified until identified, and it is a flying object, so year, why the hell not, we have seen weirder stuff

    @tahirakram they’re not saying anything

The abbottabad helicopter/UFO was shot down near the Bilal Town area, and there’s report of a flash. People saying it could be a drone."

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sounds alot like us here on AT:

@kursed What really happened doesn’t matter if there is an official story behind it that 99.999% of the world would believe
@kursed Another rumor: two copters that followed the crashed one were foreign Cobras – and got away

@ahmedbilal @kursed Sadly. We should start learning how to spread believable stories and recreate a reality that suits us.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @raihak Funny, moving to Abbottabad was part of the ‘being safe’ strategy

Since taliban (probably) don’t have helicpoters, and since they’re saying it was not “ours”, so must be a complicated situation#abbottabad

@raihak yep, the mad power cuts have reached abbottabad – 14 hours daily – luckily I have a generator AND a UPS at the coffee shop

@tahirakram yea. *hides his giant swatter*

  31. Ha, ha, ha, ha, this is too funny:

Celebrity Apprentice: Obama Hates Trump So Much…He Interrupted His Show?

"When we last left our intrepid apprentices, NeNe Leakes was mad at Star Jones for betraying her friendship with LaToya Jackson, despite agreeing with her in the boardroom five minutes ago that LaToya should be fired. I don’t know. Everyone back in the suite predicts that NeNe was fired (just like I did last week! Aww!) and their poker faces when she is the first one to come back into the room are t-t-t-terrible. Nailed it."

    ReplyDelete
  32. "All right, who’s fired? Oh NO! Obama hates Trump so much that he’s interrupting his show to tell us that Osama bin Laden is dead! Talk about overshadowing Trump’s game."

    ReplyDelete
  33. Denise - hah, that's hilarious. Thank you modern technology.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And wasn't the WH basking in the schadenfreude of that moment?

Talk about emasculating the pompous ass Trump who fixated on the most important issues of our day, Obama's birth certificate and his grades from college.

While the Commander in Chief is giving orders to kill Obama, and the mission is successful.

Trump should be hanging his head in shame.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Coming on the heels of Mitt Romney talking about hanging Obama, and his written op-ed piece that this is "peacetime" and Romney is circling the drain, too, by comparison.

There must be huge smiles in the WH and among Obama's campaign staffers this weekend.

I thought I heard a big "Go Obama!" last night coming from Rahm's house.

The MH-60S Seahawk helicopter is designed to perform vertical replenishment (VERTREP), combat search and rescue (CSAR), special warfare support and airborne mine countermeasures (AMCM) missions. Additionally, in its armed configuration, it can conduct anti-surface warfare (ASUW).

Mostly seasonal it looks like, we're still bouncing along the bottom.

  42. Top in Copper near?

COT REPORTS – HEDGE FUNDS DOWNSIZE COPPER HOLDINGS

Seems like a reasonable argument. Take for example this FT article (here) that Chinese copper imports are being re-exported into LME warehouses as Chinese traders can no longer finance inventories on the mainland. Estimates are that there are over 700,000 tonnes of metal sitting in bonded warehouses in China that would avoid the 17% value-added tax if it were to be re-cycled in this manner. This activity is consistent with a 43% drop in monthly copper imports to 192,161 tonnes in March compared to the same month last year (here).

I'm still confused as to why it's so hard for so many people to see the bubble that China has been blowing.

Here's a story on Obama The Socialist

    http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/29/how-liberal-is-president-obama/

    ReplyDelete
  51. That one is ON POINT, Thor. By most standards of the recent past, Obama is more of a moderate Republican, but labels are hard to shake, even when there's a mountain of evidence proving otherwise. And the political continuum has shifted so far right, that anything even just vanilla "conservative" is seen as "liberal" nowadays. It's truly insane.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Although I see Nate Silver disagrees with that assertion. Pretty well stated objective case he makes that Obama is basically a run of the mill moderate Dem.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Canadian elections update:

Looks like Cons. govt. again. 3rd time. Minority/manjority - don't know yet.

Oh well, the libs are divided. Funny, Cdns rejected the middle. The official opposition will be the left. Fun!

    ReplyDelete
  54. ICan - Congratulations?

Manny - still, by historical standards, Obama is well within Republican territory on most issues.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Conservative majority! Well, that was money well spent. We got the same guy, only now with a majority. Our Liberal candidate was kinda like John McCain in that he had no chance in hell of winning. Always wondered how it is, that the party who puts a candidate like that up, has no clue.
